Rafale: The Sailing City

Writer's picture: Randall HarrisRandall Harris

"Oh, yes. The Rafale is an acquired taste, but look around! This place is like a whetstone for the body and soul. One can only marvel at its honest brutality. Here, even the pampered have calloused hands and dirty nails. Here, everyone works, and everyone fights for Rafale."

~Cecil Pantegrew- Traveling Merchant Extraordinaire!~

The Rafale is a tent city in the heart of the Sali Desert. It consists of three sections. The wealthy outsiders, the best gladiators, and the top mechanical engineers reside at the head of the city. The city's central area resembles a marketplace with several avenues of pop-up shops, food vendors, and merchant stands surrounding a massive arena. The rest of the residents live in the rear end of the city.

The arena is where everyone trains in the art of Aleamal Aljamaeiu, a fighting technique taught to all residents of Rafale. In case of an attack, every resident fights to defend the city, regardless of their wealth, gender, or social status. The arena is also where the people hold the Tempest Tournament. The Tempest Tournament is a week-long battle royal where residents challenge each other for the chance to become the mayor of Rafale. The victor will face off against the current mayor for the title and the responsibility of running the city.

Rafale faces numerous challenges. The environment makes it a difficult place to live, let alone thrive. The city is constantly bombarded with violent sand storms, giant tunneling monsters, marauders, and a massive flying creature whose wingspan is so vast it blocks the sun. The creature is known as Adar Enfawr, the third child of Tamiel. Adar can create tornados just by flapping its wings and has been known to deviate land masses. Despite all these challenges, the people of Rafale have found a way to survive. The city has massive sails that grip the storm winds and sail the city across the sand. The winds also turn the many windmills, generating and storing energy for the city. When the storms subside, the city lowers giant mechanical legs and raises lookout balloons. Once all the balloons are in the air, it is safe for people to carry on with their day-to-day activities.

Happy Spring Everyone! (Like for real this time.) I want to thank you for your sub, time, and support! The third book is done with the edits. I'm working with my buddy Ryan O'Connor, a technical writing wizard. Together, we finished the final rewrite of the first book. Getting it ready for distribution! Also, if anyone is interested in running a demo of Aalam, shoot me an email, and we can do the damn thing!! Again, I can not thank you enough for your support! I love you like a soft Springtime breeze!

Take Care!
